But he did know he wanted to backpack from Georgia to Canada. Travis made it as far as Virginia Beach. When he saw the ocean, he knew he wanted to stay.
Getting here wasn’t simple, though. He wasn’t sure where he could ride his bike or walk.
“Can I ride a bike on the interstate? Do I walk on the left side?” At one point, the police picked him up, and he spent two days in jail.
He also told me that approaching people is hard. But once we started talking, he opened up. When I asked about hardships, out came all of his goofy expressions.
He looked around at the ocean and said, “I’m just not gonna preach about hardships when I’m standing where I’m standing.” I get that.
But he knows what it feels like to arrive somewhere exhausted. So Travis wants to help the next person.
PS: If you see Travis around Virginia Beach, say hello. He lit up like a Christmas tree when I asked if I could take his picture.
